Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be unconscious?

No, you will be very relaxed, but you will be able to respond. You will probably not, however, remember your therapy.

Will I have an IV?

Yes, the IV is the means whereby drugs are administered. The IV is placed in the back of the hand, the wrist area or the forearm.

Will I feel anything during the therapy?

The drugs used in IV sedation are powerful pain relieving drugs, which make you comfortable.

Will the Doctor focus on my sedation or my dentistry?

Your safety is assured by the presence of an anesthetist who will constantly monitor your well-being. The Doctor will concentrate on providing quality dental care.

With sedation or “sleep” dentistry, how long will it be before I can return to work and normal activities?

If there are no surgical procedures, most people return to work and normal activities the next day.

Can I eat or drink before my appointment?

It is ok to eat or drink before the examination appointment. However, you should not eat or drink for 6 hours before the appointment for IV sedation. This includes drinking water. This rule is very important for your safety.

Can I drive myself to the IV sedation appointment?

Yes, but you cannot drive yourself home or take a taxi afterwards. You must have a companion or friend drive you home.

Do I need a referral to your office?

No, we welcome both referred and non-referred patients.

Does the Doctor do other kinds of sedation?

Yes, we use nitrous oxide and oxygen, as well as oral medications, which are milder forms of sedation.

Does my insurance carrier cover sedation or “sleep” dentistry?

If you are having the removal of one or more of the wisdom teeth, insurance carriers usually cover IV sedation to some degree. Unfortunately, insurance carriers usually do not cover IV sedation for sedation or “sleep” dentistry. They usually do cover the dental procedures performed if you are allowed to go out of your network.

Do you accept dental insurance?

We accept most types of dental insurance.

Does the Station Dental Doctor only perform sedation or “sleep” dentistry?

We only offer sedation dentistry for patients who need this for their visit. We perform most of our procedures without sedation.

Are there people who cannot have sedation or sleep dentistry?

Yes, some medical conditions may prevent you from having sedation or “sleep” dentistry. Some medical conditions are best handled with hospital dentistry.
